Georgetown:
Hallie Avant Rowan, 88, widow of A. Lee Rowan, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at Agape Senior Assisted Living Lexington.
Mrs. Rowan was born in Upper Georgetown Co. on October 5, 1921, a daughter of the late Ollie L. Avant and Gertie Cribb Avant. She was Salutatorian of The Class of 1939 at Johnsonville High School. Mrs. Rowan was a retired employee of Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Rowan was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church and a life member of the United Methodist Women. She was a member and past president of the Susanna Wesley Church School Class and the Duncanites. Mrs. Rowan served her church in a number of capacities including Lay Delegate to the Annual Conference and as a member of the Administrative Board. She was also a member of the " Saints Alive" Choir.
Mrs. Rowan was a life member and Past Matron of Winyah Chapter #148, Order of the Eastern Star. She served in many offices on the local, district, and state levels of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Rowan Georgetown was the 1997 "Gamecock of the Year" for the Georgetown County Gamecock Club.
Surviving are: a daughter Lee R. Murphy (Jim) of Lexington; a son, Hal Rowan (Dianne) of Florence; three grandchildren, Kerry Murphy (Ailsa) and Kurt Murphy (Amanda), both of Lexington, and Kristen Rowan of Columbia; four great-grandchildren, Tommy, Tristan, Ainsley, and Kinsey Murphy; a sister-in-law, Louise Avant of Hanahan; and a brother-in-law, Howard Vess of Accokeek, Md.
Funeral services will be two o'clock Friday afternoon, May 21, 2010, at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. G. Edward Usher. The family will receive friends in the Church Family Life Center immediate following the Funeral Service. Burial will be in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.
