Henry R. Piehler, 78, died Thursday, November 24, 2016, after a long illness. Born in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, he was educated there and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he completed three degrees, culminating in a doctorate in Metallurgy in 1967. He began his career in the Metallurgy and Materials Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA in 1967, eventually taking a joint appointment in the Department of Engineering and Public Policy. His expertise included the mechanical behavior of materials, the interaction of law and technology, and technology transfer. He was an active researcher and teacher at Carnegie Mellon until his retirement.
Henry was an avid cook and photographer. He enjoyed watching sports and was especially devoted to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was also a devotee of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
The son of the late Paul and Else (Suhr) Piehler, he leaves his wife of 51 years, Margaret Forbes Piehler; two sons, Michael and his wife Betsy, Christopher and his wife Anita; and three grandchildren, Owen, John and Hallie.
A graveside service will be held at All Saints Church, Pawley's Island, South Carolina, at 2 pm on December 22, 2016
