Obituary

Howard John King, 92, of Surfside Beach, SC, died on October 27, 2016, at the Hospice House in Georgetown, SC. For over 30 years, he lived in Ocean Lakes in Surfside. He was born in Lake City, SC, on August 11, 1924, to the late Lily Kennedy King and late George G. King. After graduating from Lake City High School in 1942, he joined the Army Air Corps and served in World War II as a radio operator in the Signal Corps. After the war, he was graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1950. He then worked at the Naval Weapons Station in Charleston, SC, until his retirement. Extremely athletic, Howard excelled in golf and was a member of Indigo Creek Golf Club in Murrells Inlet. In retirement, as a metal detector on the Grand Strand, he earned the nickname "Ring King" and was known to track down the owners of class rings if their names were engraved. In high school, he played baseball and football. As a collegian and expert diver, he organized a swimming and diving team. He was predeceased by his twin brother Walter and his older brother George. He is survived by his sister Frances King Fawcett, Charleston, nephews William L. Harvey (Janis) of Georgetown, John King of Charleston, and Gary King, Charleston. His great niece Ellie Harvey Smith (Tom), a great-great niece Perry Smith and a great-great nephew Whit Smith live in Charleston. His funeral will be private. He will be sorely missed by family and friends, who appreciate the care provided by those at Hospice House and Morningside of Georgetown.
