Obituary

CHAPMAN, Hugh Hugh McMaster Chapman, whose life was marked by an unwavering love of his family, his uncommon devotion to his friends, his influential leadership in the banking community, and his remarkable commitment to civic contribution, died of acute leukemia on April 29, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Janis Guzzle Chapman, and by the three daughters of his first marriage to Anne Morrison Chapman, who died in 1993: Anne Allston Chapman (New York City), Rachel Buchanan Chapman (Columbia, South Carolina), and Mary Chapman (Mrs. Scott) Boyd, who is the mother of his four grandchildren, Charles Austin Boyd, Hugh Chapman Boyd, Robert Crawford Boyd, and Anne Morrison Boyd (all of Columbia, South Carolina). Hugh Chapman was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on September 11, 1932, the youngest of five sons of James Alfred Chapman, Jr., and Martha Marshall Chapman. Judge Robert Foster Chapman is his only surviving brother, his deceased brothers being James Alfred Chapman III, William Marshall Chapman, and Joseph Wallace Chapman. After graduating from Baylor School (Chattanooga) and receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Carolina in 1955, he served as Captain in the U.S. Air Force for three years. He earned a graduate degree from Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. Beginning his lifetime career as a banker, he joined The Citizens and Southern National Bank of South Carolina in 1958 and became its Chairman and CEO in 1974. He served as President of The Citizens and Southern Corporation and as Vice Chairman of C&S/Sovran Corporation before becoming Chairman of NationsBank South (1992-1997), later a part of Bank of America. He retired from his banking career ten years ago. At the time of his death, Hugh Chapman was serving as a Trustee of The Duke Endowment, East Lake Foundation (Chairman Emeritus), the Woodruff Arts Center (former Chairman and Life Trustee), and CF Foundation. Formerly he served as Director and Trustee of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the South Carolina Foundation for Independent Colleges, S.C. Educational Television Foundation (Chairman), Presbyterian College, Benedict College, The Palmetto Foundation (Chairman), Atlanta History Center, Atlanta Botanical Garden, Central Atlanta Progress, Atlanta Chamber of Commerce (Chairman), The High Museum of Art, the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (Chairman of the Finance Committee), the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, the Center of Theological Inquiry, the Georgia Research Alliance, and the Panama Canal Company. While living in South Carolina, he was involved in a host of civic activities ranging from higher education to the arts. In recognition of his service to the banking community, Hugh was named to the S.C. Business Hall of Fame and was elected President of the S.C. Bankers Association. He also served as a Director of the Federal Reserve Bank (Richmond/Charlotte) and the American Bankers Association. His other business directorships were with Inman Mills, SCANA Corp., Printpack, Inc., WestPoint Stevens, and The Williams Companies. Included among his distinctions were Honorary Doctorates from the University of South Carolina, Winthrop University, Medical University of South Carolina, and Wofford College. He was granted the Palmetto Council Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. The family will receive friends at PATTERSON'S SPRING HILL, (1020 Spring Street, N.W., Atlanta, Georgia) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1. The memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2. A graveside service, including the interment of ashes, will be held at Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church in Georgetown, South Carolina, at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 4. In lieu of flowers, friends may choose to make contributions to East Lake Foundation (2606 Alston Drive, Atlanta, Georgia 30317) or Crossnore School (P.O. Box 249, Crossnore, North Carolina 28616).
