Obituary

Georgetown: Jackie Estridge Jernigan, 81, passed peacefully on Sunday, March 29, 2020, at his home in Georgetown, South Carolina, surrounded by loving family. Jackie was born June 09, 1938 in Florence, South Carolina, the only child to the late Ruff Kirby and Kathleen Jernigan. Moving to Georgetown, South Carolina, Jackie was educated in the Winyah School System before graduating Furman University earning a Bachelor of Science. Jackie married Alicia Sports 1967 and two sons were born from this union. Jackie professed his life to Christ at an early age and faithfully served his Lord and First Baptist Church until the end. Jackie served multiple terms as an ordained deacon, church moderator, and a founding member of the Dr. Lide Williams Sunday School Class. While in service to First Baptist Church, Jackie taught youth Sunday school and training union making a difference in the lives of the younger generation in the community. He served as Chairman of the former First Baptist Church School board. He was also Vice President of the Georgetown Baptist Historical Society. Jackie served as past Grand Master, Winyah Masonic Lodge 40, Georgetown, South Carolina. He was a proud member of the Scottish Rite for over 50 years. Socially, Jackie served as a proud member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans South Carolina Division, Battery White Camp 1568. He was also a member of the 7th Brigade Honor Guard. In addition, Jackie was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution where he was a charter member of The Thomas Lynch Chapter, SAR. Jackie proudly served our country in the South Carolina Army National Guard separating as an E-7 after 18 years of service . He retired from International Paper Company, Container Division 2013, after more than 52 years of service to his employer. Jackie will forever be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, and a committed follower of Jesus Christ. To know him was to simply love him. Jackie is survived by his wife Alicia Jernigan, (nee Sports) of Georgetown, two sons, Jeff Allen Jernigan (Charleston, SC,) and Justin Sports Jernigan (Elisha) (Charlotte, NC.) Four Grandchildren Jackson Stuart Jernigan, Ashton Mckenzie Jernigan (Kentucky,) Harrison Sports Jernigan, and Pierce Kilby Jernigan (North Carolina.) Additionally, Jackie is survived by Rebecca Dezarn (Kentucky,) LD Sports Jr. (Georgetown, SC) John & Pam Nelson, (McConnells, SC,) Glenn & Angie Paul, (Georgetown, SC,) Richard & Nicki Davis, (Lexington, SC). and a number of nieces and nephews. A private memorial will be held at the home of Jackie and Alicia Jernigan with family in attendance. A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends at First Baptist Church, Georgetown, South Carolina, after this health crisis subsides. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 219 Cleland St, Georgetown, SC 29440, or The American Heart Association Lowcountry Division, 887 Johnnie Dodds Blvd, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464.
