Georgetown:
Dalvin Avant, 94, passed away on Sunday, November 18, 2012, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Avant was born March 31, 1918, in Georgetown County, a son of the late Landy Wood Avant, Sr. and Mary Ella Grier Avant. He grew up in Georgetown, and graduated from Winyah High School. After serving in the Navy prior to World War II, he returned to Georgetown to work in the family grocery business. Upon the retirement of his father, he assumed ownership of the business which he ran until his retirement in 1975. Mr. Avant was a lifelong member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, and served as church Sunday School Secretary for many years.
Mr. Avant was married to the late Carolyn Henderson Avant, and is survived by three children: James Dalvin (Dal) Avant, Jr. (Carla), Patricia (Pat) Avant Coleman , and Richard Michael (Mike) Avant (Kelly); six grandchildren: Ashley Avant Gillette, Lea Coleman, Dr. Cara Coleman, Adam Coleman, Richard Avant, Olivia Avant; one great granddaughter: Dearsley Gillette; three brothers: Dr. William (Bill) Earl Avant (Eleanor), Louis Remson (Ray) Avant (Reba), Landy Wood Avant, Jr. (Landy); and one sister: Frances(Frankie) Avant Dodd (Bruce). He was predeceased by two sisters: Vernice Avant Wilson (Bunny), and Mildred Avant Juk (Mildred).
Funeral services will be held at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown, S.C., on Tuesday, November 20, 2012, at 2:30 pm. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends at the church's Family Life Center from 1:00 to 2:30pm. Burial will take place at Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be sent to Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, 901 Highmarket St., Georgetown, S.C. 29440.
