Andrews:
James Dean Benton, 87, died Friday, May 8, 2009, in Tidelands Community Hospice House in Georgetown.
Mr. Benton was born in Walterboro on May 16, 1921, a son of the late James Perry Benton and Gladys Bowers Benton. He grew up in the "Low County" and served in the Navy during World War II. Mr. Benton retired from CXS Railroad on Johns Island. He was a member of Pine Crest Baptist Church and a former Deacon at Stono Baptist Church. Mr. Benton was also an Ancient Freemason.
Surviving are: his wife, Viola B. Benton of Andrews; four sons, Archie D. (Joyce) Hanna of Andrews, Joseph L. (Janet) Hanna of Atlanta, Ga.; Rodney D. (Jannette) Benton of Goldsboro, N. C., and Blair C. (Claire) Benton of Cantonment, Fla.; four daughters, Elaine Faith (David) Webb of Ridgeway, Patricia A. Benton of Knoxville, Tenn., Michelle B. (Ed) Shank of Summerville, and Sharon B. (David) Helps of Columbia; a brother, Laverne Perry Benton (Jimmi) of North Charleston; three sisters, Evelyn Shaffer, Mell Snow and Nell (Henry) Minchew, all of Johns Island; twenty-one grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be one o'clock Sunday afternoon, May 10, 2009, at Pine Crest Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Tommy Moore. Burial will follow at four o'clock in Carolina Memorial Park in N. Charleston.
