Obituary

Pawleys Island: James Bernice Moore, 86, died Thursday, July 28, 2005, at Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet. Mr. Moore was born in Farmville, N. C. on September 18, 1918, son of the late James Bernice Moore and Marie Parsons Moore Porter. He graduated from Andrews High School and The Citadel, class of 1939, with and A. B. degree and received an L. L. B. degree from the University of South Carolina in 1942. Mr. Moore was called to active duty as a lieutenant in November of 1943 serving in the European Theater and was discharged with the rank of Captain. He began the practice of law in Georgetown in 1946 with H. L. Smith with the firm known as Smith & Moore. The firm later became Moore, Flowers & Doar. That firm later merged with McNair & Sanford, P. A. in 1987. Mr. Moore had been involved with the economic and political life of Georgetown Co. and served on the State Development Board. He was instrumental in bringing development and industry to the county, such as Oneita Knitting Mills, Georgetown Steel Corp., and Andrews Wire, and was general counsel to them. He was one of the initial founders of the Litchfield Co. and as director and general counsel for the Co. until 1986. Mr. Moore was elected in 1948 to the S. C. House of Representatives and served three terms. While there he was elected vice-chairman of the Judiciary Committee. Mr. Moore served his state in numerous capacities. He was appointed to the S. C. Development Board by Governor Hollings in 1960. Mr. Moore has been an active proponent of port development both locally and statewide. He was appointed to the S. C. State Ports Authority in 1961 and severed continuously for 35 years. On the Ports Authority Board, he served as treasurer, vice chairman, and chairman. Mr. Moore was a member of All Saints Church. In 1984 at a special occasion, the Georgetown Port honored Mr. Moore for his services to their port and Governor Riley conferred upon Mr. Moore the state's highest honor, The Order of the Palmetto for his distinguished service to South Carolina. In March 2001 the terminal at the Port of Georgetown was named in his honor. Surviving are: his wife, Mary Lee Phillips Moore of Pawleys Island; a son, James B. Moore, Jr. and his wife Totsie of Georgetown; two daughters, Harriett Moore Miller and her husband E. Stone of Pawleys Island and Porter Moore Tuttle and her husband Eddie of Mt. Pleasant; eight grandchildren, John Porter Wrenn and his wife Jeanie, Elizabeth Force Moore, Mary Katherine Hensley, Lee-Ann Tuttle, James B. Moore III, Marie Tuttle, Stone Miller, and Lydia Miller; and two great-grandchildren, John Porter Wrenn, Jr. and Katherine Lydia Hensley. Funeral services will be ten o'clock Saturday morning, July 30, 2005, at All Saints Church. Officiating will be The Rt. Rev. Charles H. Murphy III, The Rev. Thomas C. Brown, and The Rev. Terrell L.
