Surfside Beach:
The Reverend James Bonham "Sonny" Carter, Jr., 69, died Saturday, January 14, 2006, at Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet.
Rev. Carter was born in Georgetown on December 29, 1936, son of the late James Bonham Carter and Dorothy Thomas Carter. He grew up in Georgetown and graduated from Winyah High School, Kennesaw College, and Columbia Theological Seminary. Rev. Carter served in the Air Force. He was a former employee of Bendix Corp. in Jackson, Tenn. and a member of Litchfield Country Club at Pawleys Island.
Rev. Carter was ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church, USA in 1982. He served a number of churches including First Presbyterian Church of Cohutta, Ga., First Presbyterian Church of LaFollette, Tenn., Bethesda Presbyterian Church in York Co., Friendfield Presbyterian Church in Georgetown, and Trinity Presbyterian Church in Surfside Beach. He was currently interim pastor of McDowell Presbyterian Church in Greeleyville. Rev. Carter was a member of the Presbytery of New Harmony.
Surviving are: his wife, Patricia Phillips Carter of Surfside Beach; three daughters, Cynthia Renee' Carter of Woodstock, Ga., Ginger Cato and her husband David of Hiram, Ga., and Victoria Mae Leach and her husband Garry of Dallas, Ga.; his step-mother, Lois Crolley of York; three brothers, Edward Keith Carter and his wife June of N. Augusta, Billy Carter of Ft. Mill, and Glenn R. Carter of Rock Hill; three sisters, Connie Galloway and her husband William of Pawleys Island, Pat Woods and her husband Bill of York, and Evelyn Hall and her husband Buzzie of Rock Hill; four grandchildren, Terry James Garmon and his wife Crystal, Kyle Cato, and Taylor Cato, all of Hiram, Ga., and Tara Leach of Dallas, Ga.; a great-grandson, Terry Daniel Garmon of Hiram, Ga.; an uncle, David C. Thomas of Charleston; two aunts, Gertrude Chandler and her husband Rossie and Edna Sawyer, all of Georgetown; and a large number of cousins.
Funeral services will be 2 pm Monday afternoon, January 16, 2006, at Georgetown Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be The Rev. Dr. Judd Shaw, The Rev. Dr. Franklin Colclough, and The Rev. Frank Holsclaw. Burial will follow in Pawleys Island Presbyterian Churchyard.

The family will receive friends at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home Sunday afternoon, January 15, 2006, from 4 pm until 6 pm.
