Obituary

Pawleys Island: James Stuart Chandler, Jr., 60, died Saturday, August 7, 2010, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Mr. Chandler was born in Conway on December 4, 1949, a son of the late James Stuart Chandler and Sara May McKinney Chandler. He attended Georgetown County schools and graduated from Winyah High School in 1968. Mr. Chandler graduated in 1972 from Davidson College with a B. A. in Economics and received his Masters in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1973. Mr. Chandler received his Law degree from the University of South Carolina in 1977. He married Rebecca McCarthy in 1976. Mr. Chandler returned to Georgetown County where he was an environmental attorney and founder and President of the S. C. Environmental Law Project (S.C.E.L.P.). Mr. Chandler was a member of the Sierra Club and the League of Women Voters. During his career he was awarded the Sierra Club's "William O. Douglas Award", the S. C. General Assembly's "Environmental Awareness Award", and the S. C. Wildlife Federations' "Conservationist of the Year Award". Mr. Chandler was fully dedicated to his family, his passion for the protection of the environment, and his participation in a local band. Mr. Chandler was predeceased by a brother, Wayne McKinney Chandler. Surviving are: his wife Rebecca McCarthy Chandler of Pawleys Island; a daughter, Leigh Caroline Chandler of Pawleys Island; two sisters, Sara Ann Chandler Hooks (Jim) of Pawleys Island and Lucile Chandler Cook (Rodney) of Georgetown; a brother-in-law, Michael McCarthy (Linda) of Kingston, Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at two o'clock in Georgetown Presbyterian Church. There will be a reception in the Church Fellowship Hall following the service.
