Obituary

McClellanville: James Morrison "Jimmy" Leland, Jr., 54, died Wednesday, September 15, 2004, at the Medical University of S. C. Hospital in Charleston. Mr. Leland was born in McClellanville on August 7, 1950, a son of Jean Smith Stroman and the late James Morrison Leland. He attended the University of South Carolina. Mr. Leland was the owner and operator of Leland Marine Service and a member of New Wappetaw Presbyterian Church. Mr. Leland was appointed by Governor Hodges to the S. C. Department of Natural Resources Marine Advisory Committee where he served for four years. He served on numerous volunteer committees for the SCDNR over the years and was very active in the legislative process for commercial fisheries legislation. Mr. Leland was a member of the Shrimp Advisory Panel to the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council and served as a past president and vice president of The Northern Chapter of the S. C. Shrimper's Association. He also served on the McClellanville Town Council. Surviving, in addition to his Mother of McClellanville, are: his wife, Margaret G. Leland of McClellanville; two sons, James Chanler Leland and William Burgess Leland, both of McClellanville; three daughters, Alicia Horry Leland and Julia Katherine Jones, both of Mt. Pleasant, and Allison Kaiser Jones of James Island; three sisters, Patricia Leland McClellan and Martha Stroman Douglass, both of McClellanville, and Jean Elizabeth Stroman of New Bern, N. C.; and a brother, Allston Bochet Leland of McClellanville. Mr. Leland was pre-deceased by his first wife, Evelyn Horry Leland. Funeral services will be Friday morning, September 17, 2004, at eleven o'clock at New Wappetaw Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Walter G. Cook. Burial will follow in New Wappetaw Presbyterian Cemetery under the direction of the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home.
