Obituary

Pawleys Island: James "Jim" MacDonald Scott, 86, died Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at Waccamaw Community Hospital. He was born July 6, 1925 in Tarrytown, NY, a son of the late William Scott, 2nd and the late Gladys MacDonald Scott. He was educated in the Elmsford, NY elementary schools and Washington Irving Preparatory School, where he lettered in 3 sports. He graduated from Colgate University, where he was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity and served as the president during his senior year. He graduated from New York Law School and passed the Bar in 1957. He was a proud Marine who served his country in World War II enlisting at the age of 17. He served 2 ½ years in the South Pacific in the Campaigns of Guam, Tinian, and Aguijan. He recently traveled on the Honor Flight for the WW II veterans and was very moved by the trip and all that participated. Jim was employed with Young and Rubicam Advertising Agency in New York City, was an attorney in White Plains, NY for 28 years, a Judge in the Village of Elmsford, NY and was a Deputy Attorney General in St. Croix, the U. S. Virgin Islands. He resided in Elmsford, NY, moved to South Salem, NY in 1969, where he served on the Zoning Board of Appeals, lived in the Virgin Islands for one year, then retired to Pawleys Island, SC in 1984. He was Republican Party District Leader, President of the Men's Republicans Club, served as School Board Attorney in the Elmsford School District. He was a past member of the White Plains and the Westchester County Bar Association. He is a current life member of the American Legion Post 520, the Murrells Inlet V. F. W., Post #10420, and the Marine Corps League. He is a member of the Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church and Litchfield Country Club. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Jane; a son, James M. Scott, Jr. of Yorktown Heights, NY; a daughter, Susan Scott Karsten (wife of Dr. Robert Karsten); and 5 grandchildren; Dr. Kelsey Karsten of New York City, Hillary Karsten of Colgate University, Gregory Scott, student at Albany, NY University, and twins, Sarah and Lindsay Scott, currently students at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Joanne and Edward Brownley, and their children. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, William Scott, IV. Jim loved his family, the New York Yankees, golf, Colgate football and his winters in the Virgin Islands. Memorial Service will be held at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church on Monday, August 29, 2011, at one o'clock. Rev. Frank S. Holsclaw is officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Interment will be held at Kensico Cemetery, New York at a later date. Sign a guest book at www.mayerfuneralhome.com.
