Obituary

Jean Blackmon Rowell, 86, widow of Maxcy Webber Rowell Sr., passed away on May 20, 2013, after a long and wonderful life. She was born in Heath Springs, S.C. on Dec. 6, 1926, to Beuna Estell Sturgis and Lucius Alston Blackmon. She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was strong, smart, outspoken, loyal and always there for her family. Mrs. Rowell graduated valedictorian from Heath Springs High School, and graduated from Winthrop College with a degree in physical education. She taught school and coached basketball at Bennettsville High School in Bennettsville, S.C. and Andrews High School in Andrews. She also was a teacher at Williamsburg High School in West Andrews, South Carolina. She loved working in her yard and garden, playing bridge, and playing golf with the Ladies Golf Association at Cherry Hill Country Club. Never one for idle time, Mrs. Rowell worked at Andrews Nursery for 20 years. She was a Cub Scout den leader, a Brownie Scout leader, transported cheerleaders when her husband Webber was coaching, and was an avid supporter of Andrews High School. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Anna-Hannah Circle. She is predeceased in death by her husband of 62 years; children, Diane and Donald Rowell; her mother, Beuna Estell Blackmon; her father, Lucius Alston Blackmon; and her sister, Mary Rose Lundy. She is survived by her children, Rev. Maxcy W. Rowell Jr. (Brenda) of Simpsonville, S.C.; Karen "Cookie" Rowell Spillane (Mickey) of Summerville, S.C.; and James "Jim" E. Rowell (Sara) of Chesapeake Va. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and by her sister, Ann Blackmon Teague of Winston-Salem, N.C. A graveside funeral service will be held at Andrews Memorial Cemetery in Andrews on Friday May 24, 2013 at 3 p.m., with Rev. Maxcy W. Rowell Jr., officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Family Life Center before the funeral. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 301 University Ridge, Greenville, SC 29601. Fletcher Funeral Service and Mayer Funeral Home are serving the family.
