Obituary

Georgetown: Jess Summers Haigler, Jr., 85, died September 9, 2006, at Prince George Health Care Center in Georgetown. Jess was born May 20, 1921 in Orangeburg, S. C., son of the late Jess Summers Haigler, Sr. and Charlotte Roessler Haigler. He grew up in Charleston, S. C. He Attended Clemson College, School of Architecture, and graduated from Parsons School of Designing, N. Y. City. He became an instructor in interior design at Parsons before joining the Raymond Loewy Associates, where he served as Director of Interior Decorations. Jess and three friends established Philibert, Amisono, Mauro & Haigler, Inc. (PAM&H) commercial interior designers, located in New York City and Miami. Jess was the color coordinator. Following his retirement in 1977, he moved to Litchfield, where he and Roy Bartleman purchased "The Carolina Craftsman" at Pawleys Island. There, they created many unique ceramic gifts. They closed that shop in 1983. Jess was one of the Board of Directors of the National Society of Interior Designers. He was a member of the American Society of Interior Designers. He served as Corporal in the U. S. Army, Headquarters Battery, Harbor Defense at San Francisco, Ca. during World War II. As a founding member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Pawleys Island, he served on the Church Council and was Chairman of the Building Committee for the original Church. He and Roy Bartleman spent many hours hand making the Church Paraments and creating and painting the Church's ceramic communion vessels. Jess also designed the church's Stain Glass Windows. During its days of organizing, the Hospice of Georgetown Logo of a Dogwood Flower was designed by Jess. Surviving are: a sister, Carolyn Haigler Black and her husband James B. "Bud" Black, III of Georgetown; two nephews, Bryan Anthony Black of Columbia, S. C. and Stephen Douglas Black of Aiken. S. C. Memorial services will be at four o'clock Thursday, September 14th, in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Pawleys Island. Officiating will be Rev. Caldwell Day.
