Jessie David Shokes, 84, of Georgetown, SC. died Thursday, September 22, 2016 at MUSC. Mr. Shokes was born in Georgetown, SC. on November 22, 1931, a son of the late Warren Jackson Shokes and Daisy Morgan Shokes. He grew up in Georgetown and graduated from Winyah High School.
He was a Sgt. Major in H/H 374th in the Army until 1959 and retired in Civil Service at the Charleston Naval Base as a Resource Management officer(GS13) in 1987. Throughout his career, he received numerous awards to include the EEO Award at the Charleston Naval Station and the Meritorious Civilian Medal from the Department of the Navy. Mr. Shokes had a love for deer hunting and fishing.
Surviving are: a son, Jeffery Shokes (Lisa); one sister, Vivian Richburg (Oscar); and grandchildren, Jackson Shokes and Kaitlyn Shokes.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by: his wife, Leyola Wendell Shokes; a son, Wendell Jesse Shokes; two brothers, Hollie Shokes , James Shokes; and two sisters, Mittie Holmes and Louise Thomas.
Funeral Services will be eleven o'clock Wednesday, September 28, 2016, in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Benjamin Simmons. The family will receive friends and family prior to the service from ten until eleven o'clock in the Mausoleum Chapel.
