Obituary

Georgetown: John "Jack" Cannon Blount, 87, died Monday, June 23, 2014, at Tidelands Community Hospice House. Mr. Blount was born in Georgetown on July 9, 1926, a son of the late Columbus Downing Blount and Susan Cornelia "Corrie" Cannon Blount Hardy. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Blount was a former manager of the Georgetown and Williamsburg County offices of the S.C. Employment Security Commission. He was a founding member of the Ribbon Club, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Blount was an avid golfer and lover of life, and was always ready with a joke and a smile. He was a very accomplished musician and played several instruments, but was best known for his smooth vocals, especially for his signature song, Blue Moon. Mr. Blount will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Surviving are: his wife of nearly 62 years, Emily Barrineau Blount; three daughters, Suzanne Perritt (John) of Surfside Beach, and Jackie Walters (Sam) and Barbara Sossamon, both of Georgetown; three granddaughters, Lindsey Downing Walters of Pawleys Island, Laura Emily Walters of Georgetown, and Sarah Allyson Perritt of Surfside Beach; and a grandson, John Grayson Sossamon of Georgetown. Mr. Blount was predeceased by his step-father, John Hugh Hardy. Funeral services will be held at ten o'clock on Thursday morning, June 26, 2014, at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Dora Gafford. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
