Obituary

Murrells Inlet: John "Jack" E. Brooks, 90, of Wachesaw Plantation, died February 15th, 2009 at Waccamaw Community Hospital, Murrells Inlet. Mr. Brooks was born September 4th, 1918 at Mt. Kisco, NY, the eldest son of seven sons of Alicia Mary O'Brien and John E. Brooks. His grandparents were Bridget Elizabeth O'Connor and John E. Brooks of Brewster, NY and Susan Reilly and Matthew O'Brien of Mt. Kisco, NY. He graduated from St. Francis of Assisi, Mt. Kisco, NY in 1932, St. Mary's High School, Katonah, NY in 1936, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II. He was discharged a Lt. Commander, U.S. Navy in 1946. As a cadet Mid-shipman USMMA stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, he witnessed the Japanese attack on December 7th, 1941. Aboard the USS Missouri, he witnessed the surrender of Japan in 1945. His career in marine engineering spanned over 37 years. He retired to North Litchfield, from Texaco Inc. where he was in charge of the Caltex oil tanker fleets in Sumatra, Tokyo, Zurich and New York. Mr. Brooks was a member of both the Litchfield Golf Club and Wachesaw Plantation Club. He served as the first chairman of the Wachesaw Plantation Property Owners Association Architectural Review Board from 1989 to 1993, and was a volunteer commissioner of the Georgetown Water and Sewer District for 11 years. Mr. Brooks was predeceased by his wife, Lucille Griesser Brooks. Surviving are his daughters; Patricia Brooks Roberts (John) of St. Croix, USVI, Lorelei Robbins of Atlanta, GA and Catherine Robbins of Memphis, TN. Grandchildren are Tara, Erin, John, Sarah and Michael. Surviving brothers are James Brooks (Florence) of Murrells Inlet, and Arthur Brooks (Barbara) of Apex, NC. Mr. Brooks attended Precious Blood of Christ Church, Pawleys Island, where a funeral mass will be on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 3:15 pm.
