Georgetown:
John Nesbit Carter, Sr. 92 peacefully departed this life on Friday, April 26, 2019, leaving an abundance of happy memories and a heritage of perseverance and personal strength.
Mr. Carter was born on May 20, 1926 in Georgetown County, a son of the late John Benson Carter and Minnie Lena Goude Carter. He was raised in Georgetown and served as the owner operator of general stores for over sixty years. As a young man he trained under his father-in-law, Temus Howard, at the Francis Marion General Store. After a successful tutelage, he opened his first store on Saint James Street before permanently settling his general store at the intersection of Highway 701 and Choppee Road. These stores, Black River Mercantile and John N. Carter and Son, earned him the moniker "Unofficial Mayor of Black River". He proudly served the communities of Annie Village, Plantersville, Choppee, and the farms and plantations of the area.
Nesbit was a dedicated servant to his community. Family and friends. His wife, Minerva Howard Carter, preceded him in death in 1985.
He is survived by; a son, John Carter and his wife Patty;,his grandchildren; Caitie Carter, Casey Carter, Kendal Skelton, and Virginia Taylor; and four great-grandchildren. The memories he created will be treasured by his family forever.
Graveside Services will be two o'clock Sunday afternoon, April 28, 2019, in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens. Officiating will be the Reverend E. Ragland Coxe.
The Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
