Obituary

Pawleys Island: John Clifton Hawkins, age 70, went to be with his Lord July 30, 2013 at Tidelands Community Hospice House in Georgetown after an extended illness. Mr. Hawkins was born in Atlanta, Ga., the son of the late Margaret Wilcox Hawkins and Waldo Pickens Hawkins, Jr. He grew up in High Point, NC and spent his early professional engineering career as Deputy of the Waste Water Division of SC DHEC in Columbia and the last 34 years in Pawleys Island, where he designed many of the neighborhoods and subdivisions as a partner of Engineering Technical Services of Pawleys Island. He was a brilliant scholar and engineer who gave all the Glory to God (I Cor. 4:7 and James 1:17) for blessing him beyond measure with ability, education and opportunity. He graduated from the University of SC with a BS in civil engineering and a MBA in Business Administration, and a MS in Environmental Systems Engineering from Clemson University. His final engineering years were spent inventing and patenting a wastewater treatment process that was purchased by GSW&SA. He was a veteran of the US Navy. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Elizabeth Gattshall Hawkins, his son John Clifton Hawkins II (Masumi) of Brooklyn, NY; a sister Anne Hawkins Taber of Matthews, NC; 1 nephew; 3 nieces; and a number of great nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his daughter, Brooke O'Brion Hawkins. He attended All Saints Parish Waccamaw for years and recently was a founding member of Pawleys Mission Abbey. He was so grateful to be blessed by the outpouring of love and support by his church friends and family, by his Sigma Chi, Gamma Nu Fraternity brothers during college and again in his final years of illness with COPD. Services will be held at noon Saturday August 3, 2013 at All Saints Church followed by a burial in the All Saints Cemetery. A reception for friends and family will be held afterwards at The Abbey. The Rt. Rev. Charles H. Murphy, III and The Rev. Stuart P. Boehmig will be officiating. Sign a guest book at www.mayerfuneralhome.com. The family will be receiving visitors at the Hawkins home in Pawleys Island. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be sent to the John Clifton Hawkins Memorial Fund at Pawleys Mission Abbey, PO Box 3999, Pawleys Island, SC 29585, or a charity of one's choice.
