Georgetown:
John McCarten Hilliard, Jr., 76, died Wednesday morning, September 13, 2006.
Mr. Hilliard was born in Georgetown on October 2, 1929, a son of the late John McCarten Hilliard, Sr. and Lucy Swindell Credle Hilliard. He grew up at Oak Grove and graduated from Andrews High School. Mr. Hilliard was in the first graduating class of the Palmetto Military Academy. He joined the S.C. Army National Guard and served as Battalion Commander of the 4th Battalion 178th Field Artillery Battalion in Georgetown and as Brigade Commander of the 151st Field Artillery Brigade in Sumter and also commanded the 228th Signal Brigade as a General Officer. Mr. Hilliard graduated from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He retired from his military career as a Brigadier General.
Mr. Hilliard owned and operated Hilliard Electric Company. He was very active in the Georgetown Saddle Club and was a former chief of operations for the Georgetown County School District. Mr. Hilliard was a member of Georgetown Presbyterian Church and was the widower of Jacqueline Altman Hilliard.
Surviving are: a son, John M. Hilliard, III and his wife Bonnie of Georgetown; a sister, Alice H. Elliott of Estill; two granddaughters, Eliza H. Fettermann and her husband, Joel of Bremerton, Wash. and Katherine Haven Hilliard of Georgetown; and a great-granddaughter, Stella Maris Fettermann.
Memorial services with Military Honors will be at eleven o'clock Saturday morning, September 16, 2006, at Georgetown Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Stephen H. Wilkins.
