Obituary

Georgetown:
John Kay McCormac, 81, died Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Mr. McCormac was born in Columbia on March 25, 1922, the son of the late Albertus & Henrietta McCormac. He was a graduate of Columbia High School and attended the University of South Carolina prior to entering the US Army during World War II. After the war, he returned to civilian life as a flight instructor and later as an insurance agent. He retired from State Farm Insurance Co. after 40 years. He also continued his military service in the SC Air National Guard and retired as a Major. He was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church and served on various boards. He was an avid golfer, amateur artist, and loved flying and sailing.
He was a member of the Lion's Club, Big Brothers and the Jaycees, where he was elected Young Man of the year in 1955. He helped organize the Ribbon Club and was its first president. He also, helped organize and served as chairman of the Low County War Birds and was honored at their 33rd annual reunion in 2000 as organizing charter member and for outstanding service. He served on the Georgetown Board of Directors for Andrews Bank & Trust for many years.
He was instrumental in organizing the Commission for Higher Education in Georgetown County. He served as its first chairman and remained involved for many years. During his involvement and through his efforts with the commission Coastal Carolina expanded their programs to Georgetown County. Coastal Carolina University awarded him its "Founder's Medallion" in 1995 for his continuous service and outstanding leadership as a pioneer in the vanguard of higher education.
Survivors include: his wife of 62 years, Marian Rowell McCormac; two daughters, Kay M. Bonnoitt and her husband Hugh Esmond "Tez" Bonnoitt of Georgetown and Etta M. Siau of Columbia; four grandchildren, Shannon Kay Siau of Charlotte, N. C., Patrick McClary Siau, Jr. and his fiancé Katie Agpaoa of Columbia, Hugh Esmond Bonnoitt, III of New York, N. Y., and John McCormac Bonnoitt and his wife Roselle Lawson Bonnoitt of Greenville; and a great-granddaughter, Olivia Marie Siau of Columbia.
Mr. McCormac was predeceased by: his sister, Marjorie M. Boone of Greenville and a grandson, Albert M. Bonnoitt of Georgetown.
Funeral services will be two o'clock Sunday afternoon, February 29, 2004, at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Phillip C. Thrailkill.
The family will receive friends at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home Saturday afternoon, February 28, 2004 from three until five.
