Obituary

Georgetown: John C Snyder, Jr. died Tuesday, August 11, 2009, at Tidelands Community Hospice House in Georgetown. Born September 14, 1932, he was the son of the late John C. and Bessie King Snyder. Mr. Snyder was a 1954 graduate of Wofford College. He also attended Emory University in Atlanta Ga. and received a Masters in Theology from Vanderbilt University in Nashville Tenn. He was formerly and ordained minister of the South Carolina Conference United Methodist Church. He retired as Treasurer of Oneita Knitting Mills in Andrews. His community activities included serving the Georgetown County Advisory Board to Coastal Carolina University and as a member of the Georgetown County Library System Board of Trustees. He was also a member of the Ribbon Club. He was a certified tour guide in historic Georgetown with Swamp Fox Tours for fourteen years. As an active member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown, Mr. Snyder served as former treasurer, Chancel Choir member and many years as a teacher for the Francis Asbury Sunday School class. He led this class through a study of the entire scriptures Genesis to Revelation. He was predeceased by two sisters, Eugenia S. Odom and Myrtice S. Crouch. Surviving is his wife of 54 years, Patricia Shackelford, whom he married April 9, 1955. Also surviving are daughters Sarah S. Dailey (Rob) of Atlanta, Mary S. Whittle (Craig) of Aiken and Rebecca S. Leggett (John) of Surfside Beach and one son, John C. Snyder III (Regina) of Timmonsville. Surviving grandchildren include Sierra Snyder, Tindall Leggett, Davis Whittle, John C. Snyder IV, and John Clayton Leggett. Additional survivors include three nephews Alvin Odom, Eugene Odom John B. Crouch Jr. and niece Ann Crouch O'Neal. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 16, 2009, at Duncan Memorial United Methodist, 901 Highmarket St. in Georgetown. Conducting the service will the Reverend Doctor, Eddie Usher. He will be assisted by the church lay leader Rick Richardson. The family will receive friends in the family Life Center of the church immediately following the memorial service. A service of interment for the family will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. Sign a guest book at www.mayerfuneralhome.com.
