John Stewart "Stew" Swift, 96, of Pawleys Island, passed away peacefully at home on September 19th.
Stew was born to parents William Wilson Swift and Lila Frew Kurtz Swift, on October 5, 1925 in Memphis, Tennessee. Upon graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, DC, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and served honorably in Germany during World War II.
Following the war, Stew attended the University of Miami and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1950. Stew retired from the Association of American Railroads after 38 years of loyal service and was the Director of Military Transportation.
Stew is survived by his loving wife, Josephine Schubert Newkirk Swift, and was predeceased by his first wife, Marilyn Jean Moser Swift. He is also survived by children, Andy Swift of Burke, VA, Jonathan Swift (Tim Turner) of Richmond, VA, Jennifer Swift Benavides (John Benavides), and grandsons, Justin Benavides and Jordan Benavides of Austin, TX.
Active in church choirs throughout his life, Stew found his spiritual home at Georgetown Presbyterian Church singing bass. Golf was a major passion for Stew and he played regularly as a member of Litchfield Country Club. He was also an avid follower of his beloved Dallas Cowboy and was known to enjoy the occasional martini.
A private family service will be held at Georgetown Presbyterian Church on Thursday, September 22nd.
