Joseph (Joe) Ernst Spearman, 82, died Saturday, February 25, 2006, after declining health in Georgetown.
Joe was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee February 8, 1924. He attended Clemson College from September 1941 until 1942, where he was the first freshman ever awarded the R. W. Simpson Medal. He served in the Army Air Corp from 1942 until 1946 as a B24 pilot. Joe always delighted in telling his children and grandchildren, that while he was training in Charleston, he flew his plane under the Cooper River Bridge. Joe was awarded the Purple Heart in 1944, after his plane was shot down over Italy. After returning to the states, Joe received his undergraduate degree in Textile Chemistry from Clemson College in 1949, and his Masters in Textiles and Chemicals from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1951.
Before retiring from the business world, Joe served as Vice President of Henkel Corporation and General Manager of their US Textile and Leather Chemical Division. He was active as Vice President of Personnel and Administration, and as Senior Consultant for Henkel Chemicals, US.
After his retirement, Joe served 2 terms as Commodore at Belle Isle Yacht Club. He did volunteer work as a docent at Brookgreen Gardens. Joe was an avid golfer and always enjoyed boating, fishing, and traveling to the mountains.
He is survived by: his wife of 57 years, Virginia (Jody) Jo Irwin Spearman of Georgetown; his son, Robert Irwin Spearman and his wife Susan of Mt. Pleasant; three daughters, Jo Lynn Rehe of Atlanta, Ga., Paty Virginia Cowden and Mary Louise Parnell and her husband Roger, all of Mt. Pleasant; a sister, Paty Spearman Boyle of Muenster, Tex.; and eight grandchildren.
Memorial services will be four o'clock Monday, February 27, 2006, at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. Officiating will be Father Bob Ott.
