Obituary

Julia "Judy" Augusta Farrior Drake, passed away in Saluda on July 17, 2012. She was born October 5, 1914, in Tampa, Fla., to Dr. Joseph Brown Farrior Sr. and Evelyn Gray Searcy Farrior. The family is of seven generations of doctors, artists and lawyers. She attended University of Alabama and Florida State (Kappa Delta Sorority) and graduated in 1938 from the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. The Tampa Tribune deemed her, "The Busiest Girl in Town" in 1937 for her professional and social activities: Charter Member of the Spinsters Club of Tampa; Merry Makers Sponsor; and Maid in the 1937 Court of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla. She helped found the Florida Home Health System. Julia Augusta Farrior married Edward "Ted" Drake Jr. on July 8, 1939, and had two daughters, Julia Lee Drake and Sarah Russell Drake Streetman. Judy was a member of the Junior League of High Point and Tampa, Daughters of American Revolution, Colonial Dames, and Children of the Confederacy. She was a faithful member of Saint Mary's Episcopal Church and was on the Altar Guild, taught Sunday school, and held offices with the Episcopal Church Women. As a member of The Garden Club of High Point, she won blue ribbons and was a Master Gardener. She moved to Pawley's Island, S.C., in the late 1960s and joined All Saint's Episcopal Parrish, where she served as president of Episcopal Church Women. Judy returned to Tampa in 1987, residing at Canterbury Towers, which was featured in the book "A Place Called Canterbury." Active in Saint Andrews Episcopal Church, she served on the Altar Guild, and as a member of The Junior League and Salvation Army Auxiliary. In 2003, Judy moved to Oakenham Plantation, circa 1834, Saluda. She loved oceans, gardens, historic places, books and nature. She helped rehabilitate wild mammals and migratory birds. She attended Christ Church Episcopal School Chapel, and Christ Church. She traveled to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the dedication of the auditorium and center in celebration of her family, the Searcys, who founded Stillman College. She is survived by a daughter, Sarah Drake Streetman of Saluda; three granddaughters, Katherine Drake Streetman of Seattle, Wash., Leah Farrior Streetman of New York, N.Y., and Burgin Eaves Streetman Lambrecht, grandson-in-law William Lambrecht and her great-grandson Charles August Lambrecht, all of San Antonio, Texas;. grandsons, Marc Mueller of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Jonathan Myers of County Cork, Ireland; and siblings, Dr. Richard T. Farrior and Sarah Farrior Hunter of Tampa. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Drake Jr.; a daughter, Julia Lee Drake of Pawley's Island; and her parents. A celebration will be at five o'clock on Saturday afternoon, September 8, 2012, in Old All Saints Church at Pawleys Island, S.C., with The Reverend Sarah Wood officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Churchyard under the direction of the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. Donations may be made to: Julia Farrior Drake Memorial Flower Fund, Bank of America, Pawleys Island, S.C, which was established for planting of flowering bulbs, bushes, and trees in historic places in Fla, Ala., N.C., S.C., and Va., where her family arrived at Jamestown in late 1600's.
