Pawley's Island:
Dr. Julian L. Kelly, 80, died Sunday, November 23, 2003 in Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Kelly was born March 17, 1923 in Columbia to the late Julian L. and Geneva Kelly. He was a retired Endodontist. Dr. Kelly spent his childhood in Danville, Va. and graduated from high school in Reidsville, N. C. In 1943, he had naval training at the University of Georgia in Athens. In 1944 he was designated a naval aviator at the Naval Air Training Center in Pensacola, Fla. Dr. Kelly got his B. S. degree from U.S.C. and in 1953 he graduated from Emory University in Atlanta as a Doctor of Dentistry.
Among the many awards received by Dr. Kelly are: a former "Outstanding Young Jaycee of the Year" in Atlanta, Ga.; life member in Supreme Chapter of Delta Sigma Delta in 1953; Chairman of Steering Committee of Southern Endodontic Study Group; Designated a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics in 1965; Fellow of the International College of Dentists in 1966; President of the Hinman Dental Society in 1966; General Chairman of the Hinman Dental Society in 1969; Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hinman Dental Society in 1990; served as an Advisory Committee Member of the Hinman Dental Society since 1969; Secretary of the American Association of Endodontists from 1971-1973; and President of Georgia Association of Dentists in 1971.
Dr. Kelly retired in 1987 and joined his wife "Sis" at Pawley's Island, where Sis operated Tip Top Inn. He served as Mayor of Pawley's Island for 7 years and was also the Chairman of the Georgetown County Democratic Party. .
He is survived by: his wife, Katherine "Sis", a son, Julian L. Kelly, III and his wife of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Julie Carnes and her husband of Nashville, Tenn. and Janice Quesada and her husband of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Jackie Settle and her husband of Florence, Ala.; one grandson, Julian L. Kelly, IV and one granddaughter, Kristin Kelly, both of Atlanta, Ga.; one step-daughter of Stillwater, Okla.; one step-granddaughter of Sioux Falls , S.D. and one step-great-grandson of Sioux Falls, S.D.
A "Celebration of Julian Kelly's Life" will be one o'clock Thursday afternoon, December 4, 2003, at the Conference Center of Pawleys Plantation, Pawley's Island.
