Katherine Evelyn Ayers Bell, 83, widow of Clifford T. Bell, Jr., passed away January 19, 2014 in Georgetown, S.C.
Mrs. Bell was born March 28, 1930 and was the daughter of Frank Jackson Ayers and Lucy Elizabeth Blackerby Ayers. She grew up in Greenville, S.C. and graduated from Ellen Woodside High School. Mrs. Bell graduated from Winthrop College in 1950 and was a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron Honor Society. Her first teaching position was in Andrews, S.C. Here she met Mr. Bell and began her life as a devoted and loving wife and mother. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Bell was employed with Georgetown County Schools for 28 years.
Mrs. Bell was a member of Georgetown Presbyterian Church for sixty years. She served as Circle Chairman, Treasurer of the Women of the Church and was a Youth Director.
Over the years, she enjoyed directing weddings at the church and volunteering for numerous church functions. She was a member of The Eastern Star and The DAR.
Surviving are her five children, four daughters and a son. Lyn Galloway (Randy) of Yorktown, Virginia, Louise Cooper (Ronnie) of Columbia, S.C., Katherine Mitchum (Kenny) of Georgetown, S.C., Cliff Bell (Christy) of Surfside, S.C., Margaret Wood (Jim) of Easton, Maryland. There are thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Surviving also are her three sisters, Lucy Gunthrope of Melbourne Beach, Florida, Barbara Cummings and Peggy Brown of Greenville, S.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Thomas Bell, Jr., her parents, three brothers, Jack, Bruce and Bobby Ayers and one sister Frances Tadlock.
Services will be at the Georgetown Presbyterian Church one o'clock Thursday afternoon, January 23, 2014. Officiating will be The Rev. Dr. Stephen H. Wilkins, Bruce M. Carl, and The Rev. Dr. William H. Puckett, Jr. Burial will follow in Andrews Memorial Cemetery in Andrews, S.C.
The family will receive friends at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home Wednesday evening, January 22, 2014 from six until eight.
