Katherine Porter Grant, 91, of Clemmons passed away on Thursday, April 1, 2004 at her home.
She was born on September 28, 1912 in Andrews, S. C. to Dr. Davis S. Porter and Kate Hogan Porter. She graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Music in 1933. She taught public school music in Andrews, SC for 10 years.
Mrs. Grant was preceded in death by her husband, John Bynum Grant, Jr., an infant son, and her sister Margaret P. Matthews.
Survivors include her children: John B. Grant, III and wife Linda-Rae of Summerville, S. C.; David P. Grant and wife Deanna, of Morehead City, N. C.; Richard J. Grant of Raleigh, N. C.; and Virginia G. Flynt and husband Fred of Clemmons, N. C. She had four grandchildren: Andrew and Katie Flynt of Clemmons, N. C.; Molly G. Waring of Helena, Alabama; and Sarah G. Powell of Summerville, S. C.
She was a member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church and an active member of the Clemmons Garden Club for many years. As a sweet, loving, and devoted mother and grandmother who always gave unselfishly of herself, she was a positive influence on her family and friends. She had a vibrant personality with a passion for music, decorating, and flowers. Mrs. Grant especially enjoyed playing bridge, an activity which she participated in for seventy years until a recent illness.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2004 at 2:30 p.m. at New Philadelphia Moravian Church, 4440 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, N. C. A burial service will be held at Andrews Memorial Cemetery in Andrews, S. C. on Sunday, April 4, 2004 at 4:00 p.m.
The family will receive friends in the parlor at New Philadelphia Moravian Church between 2:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 3 and at other times at the home of her daughter, Virginia Flynt.
