Pawleys Island:
Kathryn (Kathy) Rowens Raley went to live with her Lord and Saviour on Wednesday, June 30, 2021. She was born on February 2, 1949 in Charlotte, NC to Col. William E. Rowens and Mary Kathryn Aeby. As a child of a career Army Officer, she lived in many places growing up including Alabama, Pennsylvania, and Tokyo, Japan. She graduated from Myers Park High School in Charlotte, NC and attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Kathy met and married William L. Raley, Jr. in 1967. While they lived in Hartsville, SC, she was involved in community activities including the Arts Council of Hartsville, Kalmia Gardens board member, Kelly House board member, Cub Scout den mother, and Guardian Ad-Litem for Darlington County.
Kathy cared deeply for the special needs children and worked for the federal program Pro-Parents. This program helps teach parents about the requirements of local school systems in regard to providing for their special needs children. She traveled extensively throughout South Carolina for many years advocating for this cause. Kathy even had the opportunity to go to Washington, DC on multiple occasions to lobby for additional funding and support.
In Hartsville, the family was members of St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church where she was also very involved. Kathy was a lay reader, member of the Alter Build, taught Sunday School, instrumental in starting a Daughters of the King chapter, and active in the Cursillo movement.
After a move to North Litchfield, SC, she and Bill attended All Saints Anglican Church. Kathy was captain of an Alter Guild team, led the prayer team for many years, and was active on the flower team which decorated the church for special occasions like Easter and Christmas.
In the local community, Kathy was a member of the Georgetown County Watercolor Society, volunteer at Hobcaw Barony, and member of the Grand Strand Shell Club. Her favorite activity was co-coordinator of the North Litchfield Sea Turtle team where she tended to over 80 nests along the local beaches.
Kathy is survived by her husband Bill and three children, William Patrick (Sobeth) of Greenville, SC, Michael Rowens (Ashley) of Greensboro, NC, and James Franklin (Alyshia) of Midland, NC. Four grandchildren, Dr. Will Raley of Philadelphia, PA, Mary-Kathryn Raley of Columbia, SC, and Alex and Davis Raley of Greensboro, NC.
There will be a celebration of her life at All Saints Anglican Church at 3560 Kings River Road in Pawleys Island, SC on Saturday, July 10 at Eleven O'clock. A reception will follow in the Acts Building of the church. A private interment will be at a later time.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Sea Turtle Care Center at the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston, SC.
