Pawleys Island: Kenneth Merldon "Banjo" Matthews, Jr., 51, died Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at the Medical University of S. C. Hospital in Charleston. Mr. Matthews was born in Hemingway on December 17, 1956, a son of Kenith Merldon Matthews and Joyce Ard Matthews. He grew up in Georgetown and was a graduate of Howard High School in 1974 and attended Horry-Georgetown Technical College. Mr. Matthews was an employee of Georgetown Steel and a member of Ringel Heights Baptist Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and a former member of a number of hunting and fishing clubs. Mr. Matthews was predeceased by: a daughter, Keli Renee Matthews. Surviving are: his wife, Ferol Teel Matthews of Pawleys Island; a son, Kenneth Merldon Matthews, III and his wife Tracy of Georgetown; a daughter, Meredith M. Freeman and her husband Les of Quinby; his parents of Georgetown; five brothers, Pat Matthews and his wife Renee, Rick Matthews and his wife Ginger, Tony Matthews and his wife Kathy, and Frank Matthews, all of Georgetown, and Billy Preston of Murrells Inlet; a sister, Charlene M. Jordan and her husband Junior of Georgetown; two grandchildren, Kenneth Merldon "Merle" Mathews, IV of Georgetown and Alexander James Freeman of Quinby; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be two o'clock Saturday afternoon, October 4, 2008, at Ringel Heights Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Chris Giles and the Rev. Themos J. Cribb.
