Obituary

Laura Peace Echols duPont passed away peacefully in her home at The Cascades February 24, 2017. She was predeceased by her former husbands, James Shuttleworth Johnston and William Wilson Pate, Jr; her husband, Eugene duPont, III; and her sister, Suzanne Echols DeLapp Hudson. Mrs. duPont was born April 13, 1924, in Greenville, the daughter of the late Clarence Terrell and Laura Peace Echols and the granddaughter of the late Bony Hampton and Estelle Chandler Peace and Laymon Luther and Sally Terrell Echols. Fondly known as Lolly by her family, Mrs. duPont is survived by her three sons, James Shuttleworth Johnston, Jr (Nan) of Pawleys Island, Ellis Murray Johnston, II (Mary) of Greenville, and Charles Peace Johnston (Beverly) of Knoxville; several step-children including Gigi duPont McShane (Mike) of John's Island; a daughter-in-love and faithful caregiver, companion, and assistant, Jackie Church (Steve) of Taylors; faithful helper, Jimmy Arnold (Hattie) of Greenville; a nephew, Robert Earl DeLapp III (Sandy); 7 grandchildren, Laura Stacy (Dan), Trip Johnston (Jodi), Nancy Beard (Jamie), Caldwell Johnston (Mary Claytor), Juliet Chobanian (John), Annie Johnston, and Jessica Jorgensen (Jeff); and 12 great grandchildren, Jackson and Margaret Stacy, Harper, Lizzie, and Charlotte Beard, Jameson and Ava Marie Johnston, Caldwell, Weston, and Fisher Johnston, Gabriel Jorgenson and Sarkis John Chobanian. Mrs. duPont was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Greenville, the Junior League of Greenville, the International Women's Fishing Association, The Quadrille Club, and Ducks Unlimited. She served on several boards in Greenville and on the board of The Nemours Wildlife Foundation. She lived a life full of adventure. Being an avid outdoorswoman, she loved both hunting and fishing, and was passionate about wildlife conservation. Her favorite place to be was outdoors enjoying the gifts of God's creation. In the 1960's she won the South Carolina State Skeet Shooting Championship for three consecutive years and in 1972 she landed a World Record 38 pound black marlin on 10lb class tippet, the first billfish of any kind caught on a fly rod by a woman. She often said "Women who don't fish just don't know what they're missing!" Mrs. duPont had a deep conviction that "Love is the most important thing. Without love, there is nothing." Inspired by her faith and this deep conviction, Mrs. duPont had many philanthropic "loves" including the Peace Center for the Performing Arts, Nemours Wildlife Foundation, The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, St. Francis Foundation, Shriners Hospital, and MUSC Children's Hospital. The family would like to thank her loyal and long-time caregiver LaTasha Gentry and other loving caregivers: Ursula Simmons, Alexis Jones, Angela Conway, Ursula Askew, Doris Acosta, Tatiana Brown, and Monique Jackson. The family will receive friends at the home of Ellis and Mary Johnston, 800 Crescent Avenue, Greenville, SC on Sunday, February 26, 2017 from 6 to 8pm. Funeral Services will be held at 3pm Saturday, March 4 at All Saints Church in Pawleys Island.
