Obituary

Greenville: Lawrence Edward Holliday, 94, formerly of Georgetown and Pawley's Island, passed away peacefully at his residence on Friday, September 27, 2013. Mr. Holliday was born in Manning of April 30, 1919, a son of the late Benjamin Walker Holliday and Ruby Weeks Holliday. He graduated from Manning High School and attended Clemson University and the University of South Carolina, although he was always a TIGER. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and became the youngest First Sergeant in the service. He also served in the Air Force Reserve and the Air National Guard. He met a beautiful young school teacher, when he moved back to S.C. and married Margie Ambrose in August of 1948. They lived in Plantersville before moving to Georgetown. They were married for 60 years until Margie's death in 2008. They had 5 wonderful children. They had to experience one of life's most difficult tragedies in the death of one child. They remained strong in their faith and both were tremendous parents. Mr. Holliday served as Postmaster at Plantersville for a time. He was a former owner and President of Holliday-Ruble Oil Company, Treasurer of Seaport Oil Company, and owner of Coastal Disposal, Inc. Mr. Holliday was also former owner of Chris Craft of Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach Marina Mr. Holliday was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown, where he served on the Administrative Board and as a member of the choir for many years. He was an Associate Member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church in Greenville. Mr. Holliday was an active member of the Georgetown community. He was a former president of the Cotillion Club of Georgetown and the Ribbon Club. Mr. Holliday was a former Rotarian and Jaycee and former member of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Winyah Indigo Society. Mr. Holliday served on the Board of Directors of Andrews Bank and Trust Co. and Plantation Federal Bank. He served as Chairman of the The Employer Support committee of The National Guard and Reserve of Georgetown and on the Advisory Private Industry Council under Governor Richard Riley for Georgetown, Horry, and Williamsburg Counties. Mr. Holliday served on the Georgetown Memorial Hospital Foundation Board and as S.C. Highway Commissioner for the 15th District for 4 ½ years. In addition to his wife, Mr. Holliday was predeceased by a daughter, Marjorie Abigail Holliday; and two sisters, Dorothy Mims and Kathleen Holliday. Surviving are: three sons, Lawrence Edward Holliday, Jr. (Robin) and Walker Ambrose Holliday (Julie) both of Pawleys Island and Dr. Joseph Weeks Holliday (Janice) of Greenville; a daughter, Margarette Holliday Carter (Kirk) of Greenville; eight grandchildren, Erin Holliday, Walker Holliday (Emily), Sally Holliday, Hayes Holliday (Katelyn), John Lawrence Holliday, Abbie Holliday (fiancée Caleb Jordan), Lucy Carter and Maggie Carter; and a great-grandson, Hunter Holliday. The family wishes to thank the staff of Interim Hospice in Greenville for their support and excellent care. Special appreciation is given to Melissa Brown for her happy disposition, incredible tender loving care and service to Mr. Holliday over the last nine months. Funeral services will be three o'clock Wednesday afternoon, October 2, 2013, at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown. Officiating will be The Rev. Dr. Dora Gafford. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery Annex in Georgetown. The family will receive friends from two until three prior to the service in Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church Family Life Center.
