Georgetown:
Lawrence "Larry" Edgar Howard, Sr., 91, died Monday, November 8, 2004, at Winyah Convalescent Center.
Mr. Howard was born in St. Augustine, Fla. on August 18, 1913, a son of the late Henry Richardson Howard, Sr. and Alice May Baker Howard. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Mr. Howard was a forester and safety supervisor with the Woodland Division of International Paper Co. and retired in 1978. He was the widower of Claudia Wolf Howard.
Mr. Howard was a member of St. Mary Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church. He served his church in a number of capacities. He was a Sunday School and Confraternity of Christian Doctrine Teacher, a lector, Eucharistic minister, and an usher. Mr. Howard was a member of the Holy Name Society and the St. Mary Renewal Group and served on the Parish Council. He was a charter and 4th degree member and past Grand Knight of Joseph M. Ros Knights of Columbus Council #3067.
Mr. Howard was active in the community of Georgetown. He was a former member and past president of Georgetown Civitan Club. He had been a member of the Georgetown Rescue Squad and past Chief and emergency volunteer with the Civil Air Patrol. Mr. Howard was a first aid and CPR instructor with The American Red Cross, helped with Tara Hall Home for Boys, and served as chairman of the board of Sarah Haven Home for Girls. He was a former Boy Scout Leader, Black River District Commissioner and Chairman and recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. Mr. Howard had also been a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. He taught Defensive Driving and other safety classes at Horry-Georgetown Technical College.
Surviving are: four sons, Lawrence E. Howard, Jr. of Plum Boro, Penn., John R. Howard, Sr., James F. Howard, Sr., and Thomas J. Howard, Sr., all of Georgetown; a daughter, Claudia Anne Howard of Tamassee; five sisters, Alice H. Shaw and Louise Marie H. Saunders, both of Orange Park, Fla., Evelyn H. Deavers of Middleburg, Fla., Edith H. Ibach of Jacksonville, Fla., and Ruth H. Holt of Effingham, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Polly Howard of Smyrna, Ga.; sixteen grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren.
The Mass of the Resurrection will be at eleven o'clock Friday morning, November 12, 2004, in St. Mary Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Ronald J. Farrell. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.
A vigil service will be at seven o'clock Thursday evening, November 11, 2004, in St. Mary our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church followed by visitation until nine o'clock in the church Parish Hall.
