Pawleys Island:
Legare "Dee" Hamilton, Jr., 67, died Monday, April 18, 2011, at the Hospice Center in Mt. Pleasant.
Mr. Hamilton was born in Columbia on February 10, 1944, a son of the late Legare Hamilton and Mabel Effingwell Mercer Hamilton. He grew up in Georgetown and graduated in 1962 from Winyah High School. Mr. Hamilton attended the University of South Carolina. He was a former Georgetown representative for New York Life and an independent insurance agent with The Dieter Company, and later worked as a sculpture preparator for Brookgreen Gardens. Mr. Hamilton was a communicant of Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church and was active in the Baskerville Community. He also volunteered for the Red Cross.
Surviving are: two daughters, Susan Hamilton Smith (Noell) of Charleston and Melissa Hamilton Szymanski (Steve) of Beijing, China; a brother, Samuel M. Hamilton of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a sister, Molly Mercer of Pawleys Island; and four grandchildren, Sarah Legare Smith and Elizabeth Hamilton Smith, both of Charleston, and Katherine Legare Szymanski and Mary Mercer Szymanski, both of Beijing, China.
Memorial services will be at one o'clock on Thursday afternoon, April 21, 2011, at Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church. Officiating will be The Rev. Alex Barron and The Rev. Melissa Timmerman. Inurnment will take place prior to the service at eleven o'clock on Thursday at Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Churchyard.
A reception will immediately follow the memorial service at the family beach house, "Slamming Doors," at 149 Atlantic Ave. on Pawleys Island.
