Georgetown: Lela Howard Cooper Mayer, 69, died Thursday, May 23, 2013, at MUSC Medical Center in Charleston. Mrs. Mayer was born in Conway on July 21, 1943, a daughter of the late Henry Clifford Cooper and Annie Lela Howard Cooper. She lived in West Virginia for a time and moved back to Georgetown as a young girl, where she graduated from Winyah High School. Mrs. Mayer received a BS Degree in Nursing from Lander University, with her class being one of the first to graduate with that degree. She had a life-long career in the nursing field, and retired as Administrator from Winyah Convalescent Center. Mrs. Mayer ("Me Me" to her beloved grandchildren) was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church and the Francis Asbury Church School class. Surviving are: her husband, Charles Thompson "Tommy" Mayer of Georgetown; two sons, Charles T. "Chuck" Mayer, Jr. and Clifford B. "Cliff" Mayer (Kelly), both of Georgetown; four grandchildren, Brooks, Landon, Morgan, and Kira Mayer; a sister, Annie Louise Elliott (Clark) of Simpsonville; and a step-sister, Ellen Nelson Barr (Capers) of Charleston. Mrs. Mayer was predeceased by an aunt, Louise Harris, with whom she lived for a time. Funeral services will be held at three o'clock on Sunday afternoon, May 26, 2013, at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Dora Gafford. Burial will follow at Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Saturday afternoon, May 25, 2013, at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home from four until six o'clock.
