Andrews:
Leonard Phifer Payne, Jr., 77, died Thursday, March 20, 2014, at his residence.
Mr. Payne was born in Trio on June 20, 1936, a son of the late Leonard Phifer Payne and Anna Vincent Smith Payne. He grew up in Andrews and graduated from Andrews High School. Mr. Payne served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960 and retired from Westvaco after 32 years of employment. He was currently employed with Smith Logging. Mr. Payne's first love was his family, and his second love was restoring classic cars.
Surviving are: his wife, DeLaine Barrineau Payne of Andrews; a son, Derrick Phifer Payne of Andrews; a daughter, Patrice Hooper of Daniel Island; three grandchildren, Alvin Mark Hooper, Jr., Zachary Chambers Hooper, and Lauren Anne Hooper; a brother, Gerald Payne (Penny) of Pawleys Island; a sister, Alicia Payne Graham of Andrews; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at three o'clock on Sunday afternoon, March 23, 2014, at Andrews Memorial Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Paul Sapp and the Rev. Murray Powell.
The family will receive friends on Saturday evening, March 22, 2014, at the Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home from six until eight o'clock.
