Georgetown:
Levi Dudley Sports, 93, husband of the late Geraldine McKenzie Sports, died Sunday, July 11, 2021, at Embrace Hospice House. He died on his 93rd birthday.
Mr. Sports was born in Florence on July 11, 1928, a son of the late Levi Dudley Sports, Sr. and Minnie Bryan Sports.
Sporty never met a stranger and loved to tell a story. Here is a small part of his story.
Sporty was born in Florence, SC and his family moved to Georgetown at a young age. He attended Winyah High School in Georgetown. Sporty's work ethic began early in life when as a young boy one of his first jobs was a carhop at the Whistlin' Pig. He could still recite the menu in speedy fashion in his later years. Soon he had the movies in his heart. He worked through high school at The Palace and Strand Theaters on Front Street and the Carolina Drive Inn out on the Conway Highway. A recent random quote on Facebook by Woody Chavis stated: "Growing up in Georgetown there was a chance that there were many people who even in a small way influenced your life. Like Mr. Sports at The Strand the way he looked after the kids at the Matinee making sure they were not left outside so long waiting on parents or allowing you to call them to make sure you got your ride home."
Not only did Sporty watch over these young people, but he also hired hundreds of them and taught by example a true and dedicated work ethic, high principles and strong morals. Later in life, after retiring from 36 years at the United States Postal Service, he went back to the
movies and began his 3rd career with Litchfield Theaters. He managed the Litchfield Theater in Litchfield Beach, The Inlet Square in Murrells Inlet and the North Charleston Theaters.
Service with a smile was Sporty's quiet motto. He spread his community service in various organizations like the Jaycees, where his hard work earned him the Man of the Year award by initiating the Easter Seals and Buc-a-Cup programs in Georgetown County. He was a Staff Sergeant in the South Carolina National Guard and a member of the Masonic Lodge. As a member of the First Baptist Church in Georgetown, he served as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent and sang in the choir. When First Baptist Church started a private school, he was named the chairman of the school board.
He was predeceased by his father, Levi Dudley Sports, Sr. and mother, Minnie Lee Bryan Sports, his brother William "Billy" Sports, a daughter, Deborah Jean Sports and his grandson, L. Brook Paul.
Sporty and Jeri were married for 68 years and were blessed with five daughters. Surviving are Alicia S. Jernigan (Jackie, deceased) – Georgetown, SC; Pamela S. Nelson (John) – McConnells, SC; Angela S. Paul (Glenn) – Georgetown, SC and Nicki S. Davis (Richard) – Lexington, SC. Sporty is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Jeffrey A. Jernigan – Summerville, SC; Justin S. Jernigan (Elisha) – Charlotte, NC; Christian Nelson – Rock Hill, SC; M. Brett Nelson (Andi) – Rock Hill, SC; Casey J. Nelson – McConnells, SC; Randall E. Paul – Central, SC; Ashley B. Paul (Jennifer) – Murrells Inlet, SC; Kristen L. McAlister (Cary) – Boise, ID; Robert H. Logan, IV (Tracy) – Asheville, NC and R. Mark Davis (Jennifer) – Charleston, SC. Additionally, there are 12 great-grandchildren and his very dear friend Jean Holland.
