Litchfield Beach:
Louis Bryan Thompson of Litchfield Beach, known from boyhood as "Bumpy," died November 11, 2003, of complications from Alzheimer's Disease. Born December 23, 1920, in Kingstree, to Claude Joseph and Lucile Bryan Thompson, he had a full, interesting life. Among the highlights: driving his father's used cars between Florida and South Carolina at the tender age of 14; leading a bomber crew in the South Pacific during World War II, starting when he was 22 years old, and again during the Korean War, for which he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and many other honors; being the first manager of Litchfield Country Club; founding two long-time Pawley's Island real estate companies, Lachicotte, McFadden & Thompson and Bumpy Thompson Realty; serving as grand marshal for the first and many subsequent Pawley's Island Fourth of July parades; and joyfully driving, until his knees gave out, a 1969 Excalibur roadster that had formerly belonged to soul singer James Brown. Besides his famous whistle, his loud pants, and his generous hospitality, Bumpy was known for that spectacular car.
More important to Bumpy than these highlights were his family and friends. He was married for 58 years to his childhood sweetheart, the late Carolyn Douglass Thompson, and together they had four daughters: Lynn T. Gagliano of Litchfield Beach.; Claudia T. Bessinger of Savannah, Ga.; Rebecca T. Godwin of Eagle Bridge, N. Y.; and Caroline T. Tresino of Greensboro, N. C. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; his sister and brother-in-law, Jim and Betty Lou Hall of Pawley's Island; and his sisters-in-law, Mrs. Louis J. Nexsen and Mrs. Claude J. Thompson, both of Kingstree, in addition to a large, extended family.
Memorial services will be eleven o'clock Friday morning, November 14, 2003 at Pawley's Island Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Frank S. Holsclaw and the Rev. Milton L. McGuirt.
