Obituary

Georgetown: Mabel Mercer Hamilton, 96, died Sunday, September 7, 2008, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston. Mrs. Hamilton was born in Georgetown on January 6, 1912, a daughter of the late Samuel Edward Mercer ad Mable Leffingwell Mercer. She was a graduate of Winyah High School and Winthrop College, Class of 1933. Mrs. Hamilton taught in the Georgetown County Schools for twenty-eight years and retired in 1977. She was the widow of Legare Hamilton. Mrs. Hamilton was a communicant of Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church. She was a former Vestry member and a past president of the Episcopal Church Women at Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church. Mrs. Hamilton was active in local and state affairs. She was a former member of the Georgetown County Board of Trustees for Schools. She was a Charter Member of the Pi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Mrs. Hamilton served on the Board of Trustees of Winthrop College from 1960 until 1988 and received a number of awards from the college for her service. Mrs. Hamilton was a member and past president of the Georgetown Garden Club. She served on the board of the Georgetown Red Cross and was a former chairman of the Georgetown Board of Health. Mrs. Hamilton was a founder and first president of Tidelands Community Hospice, Inc. and received the hospice's Norah Jones "Volunteer of the Year" in 1989. She also received the Governor's award as "S. C. Volunteer of the Year" in 1988. Mrs. Hamilton was editor and writer for the 1995 "The Guide to the City of Georgetown Historic District". She was a founder of the Georgetown County Alzheimer's Support Group. Surviving are: two sons, Samuel M. Hamilton of Winston-Salem, N. C. and Legare "Dee" Hamilton of Georgetown; a daughter, Molly H. Mercer of Pawleys Island; six grand-daughters; and thirteen great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be three o'clock Thursday afternoon, September 11, 2008, at Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Tommy H. Tipton.
