Mamie Assey Delzell, 96, died Tuesday, March 16, 2010 in Pawleys Island.
Mrs. Delzell was born in Georgetown County on February 25, 1914, the daughter of the late John Thomas Assey, Sr. and Letifa Kozma Assey. She was a life long resident of Georgetown.Mrs. Delzell and her husband owned and managed radio station WGTN where she was known as "The Town Crier" and for her program "Hello Ladies". Throughout her life she was involved in many community activities. Among many awards, Mrs. Delzell was honored with a key to the city of Georgetown and as Business Woman of the Year.
A devout member of St. Mary Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church, she was active with the Altar Society (treasurer), Catholic Women's Club, choir, and a lector at Mass. She was always willing to help without being asked.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph B. Delzell; a brother, Dr. John T. Assey, Jr.; four sisters, Rosa A. Lilly, Matilda Assey, Lillian Assey and Jesse Assey; a nephew, Dr. Michael Assey.
Having had no children, "Aunt Mamie" was loved by all her nieces and nephews: Susan Lilly Parker and sons Joseph E. Wilson(Christina) and Andrew G. Parker, Helen Lilly Johnson, John T. Adrian, James M. Assey, Jane Assey, Robert A. Assey, and Dr. C. Timothy Assey and many great and great great nieces and nephews. She was a mother to them all.
Visitation is Friday, March 19, 5:00 to 7:00 pm, in the church hall. Afterwards, a short wake service will be held in the church. Funeral services are on Saturday, March 20, 11:00 am, at St. Mary Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church.
