Andrews:
Marjorie Player Ward, 76, died Monday, October 31, 2005, at her residence.
Mrs. Ward was born in Georgetown Co. near Andrews on May 11, 1929, a daughter of the late Willie Brightman Player and Della Avant Player. She retired from the S. C. Forestry Commission in September 1993, after 47 years of service. Mrs. Ward had been recognized as "Employee of the Year" and also been honored by Westvaco Corp. for outstanding service. She also worked for 7 years in the Nursery Dept. of Trinity United Methodist Church Day Care Center and more recently at Barefoot Elegance.
Mrs. Ward was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and of the church choir and Daisy Watson Sunday School Class. She also served on various church committees and was active in many groups and activities for 9 years. Mrs. Ward was a former administrator and youth director of Trio United Methodist Church and produced annual Christmas plays there.
Mrs. Ward was also active in community affairs. She was President of the Andrews Chapter of Woodman of the Word and the annual organizer of her high school class reunion. In her final months, Mrs. Ward organized the Andrews Cancer Support Group, which continues today.
Mrs. Ward was admired throughout the surrounding counties due to her work with the Forestry Commission. Her activities in both community service and church work endeared her to both young and old. She was the widow of Horace O'Neil Ward.
Surviving are: four daughters, Barbara Grissom and Brenda Langley and her husband Luther, both of Columbia, Carol Mullis and her husband Rocky of Hilton Head, and Hope McConnell of Andrews; a brother, Willie Brightman Player, Jr. of Roseville, Calif.; a sister, Thelma Player Ward of Beaufort, N. C.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eleven nieces; and seven nephews.
Funeral services will be three o'clock Wednesday afternoon, November 2, 2005, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Sandra Stevens Poirel. Burial will follow in Gourdine's Chapel Churchyard near Andrews.
