Obituary

Georgetown: Mary Barbara Ohlsen J. Rouquie , formerly of Columbia died Sunday, October 19, 2008, at Tidelands Community Hospice House. Ms. Rouquie was born in Wilmington, N. C., a daughter of the late Jack Knute Ohlsen and Mary Lucas Davis Ohlsen Jones.  As the owner and director of Rocky/ The Barbara Rouquie Shop, a successful and exclusive ready-to-wear shop located in Columbia's Five Points district, she was known as an energetic and outgoing business woman.  Her reputation for "good taste with flair" attracted a long list of dedicated customers who missed her greatly, when she retired to the coast. A lifelong Episcopalian, Ms. Rouquie was a communicant of All Saints Parish, Waccamaw, Episcopal Church at Pawleys Island, a former communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church in Columbia, and recently attended Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church in Georgetown. Her business career was long and diverse, ranging from an early position with International Business Machines at the S. C. Tax Commission to her long term involvement with women's fashion as a consultant, commentator, accessory and ready-to-wear buyer who traveled internationally.  She was a photographic and runway model.  Her work with the Bradley, Graham, and Hamby Agency in Columbia included many advertisements and promotions that appeared nationally.  She held the Azalea Girl position for three years, appearing on the Southland Provision Company's pioneering game show, "Win with Azalea".   She was a member of the National Association of Accredited Talent and Beauty Pageant Judges and a bridal consultant who assisted clergy and directed weddings throughout South Carolina.  Ms. Rouquie also studied interior design with Jack Scoville, Sr. of Columbia at the University of South Carolina. Ms. Rouquie served as a board member of the S. C. Merchants Association and was recognized as Merchant of Year in 1977.  She was a member of the Five Points Merchants Association and the Columbia Chamber of Commerce and Action Council, and achieved Million Dollar Real Estate Producer status in the Columbia market.  She was a member of the Columbia Music Festival Association, the Columbia Museum of Art, Columbia City Ballet, and the Rice Museum. In addition to her parents, Ms. Rouquie was predeceased by: a sister, Mrs. Charles (Ferdie) Potts. Surviving are: a daughter, Emily Rouquie Ragsdale and her husband Charles of DeBordieu Colony in Georgetown; three grandchildren, Eugene Kirkland Darby, Caroline Schall Ragsdale, and Emily Mason Ragsdale; a sister, Jackie Prickett and her husband Mackie of St. Matthews; and Billy Silver, a close family friend. Funeral services will be eleven o'clock Tuesday morning, October 21, 2008,                   at All Saints Parish, Waccamaw, Episcopal Church in Pawleys Island on Highway 17.  Officiating will be The Very Reverend Edward T.
