Pawleys Island:
Mary Elise Brownell ("Meb") Graves, 95, widow of Lt. Col. William Griffin Graves II, died peacefully Saturday, September 1, 2018, on what would have been her 73rd wedding anniversary.
Meb was born January 9, 1923, in Smethport, PA, a daughter of the late Robert Foote Brownell and Elizabeth Brainard Brownell. She grew up in Jamestown, NY and attended Allegheny College. Meb and her late husband Bill moved to Pawleys Island over 30 years ago from Burlington, NC and were communicants of All Saints Church where they had been very active. She loved following her sports teams and was a supportive fan who rooted loudly from the sidelines, or more often, at the television. She was a competitive golfer, an avid beach lover and thoroughly enjoyed her card games with family and friends.
Meb was the matriarch of her family. She loved, influenced and was an active participant in the lives of all her family members, who are incredibly thankful to have had both Meb and Bill present in their lives for so long. Their marriage was a testament to their strength and love, and they instilled in all the family their passion to live life with glory and meaning.
Surviving family members include: her son, Jeffrey B. Graves (Mary) of Kiawah Island, SC; her daughter, Katherine G. Clark (Victor) of Davidson, NC; her daughter-in-law, Karen L.
