Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Harmon 97, widow of the Albert L Harmon, died December 14, 2020, in Walterboro.
Mrs. Harmon was born in Columbia, March 31, 1923, the daughter of the late Earl Siebenthaler Leatherman and Alice Rutledge Ward Leatherman She attended the one room School House in Pawleys Island and graduated from Winyah High School. Before her marriage to Mr. Harmon in 1984, she was married to E. Lloyd Knowles of Georgetown and Pawleys Island, until his death in 1975.
Mrs. Harmon worked during World War II at the Charleston Dry Dock before serving in the US Marine Corps Transport Division at Camp Lejeune. She was a long time member of All Saints Episcopal Church and later of Brown Swamp Methodist Church in Conway. Mrs. Harmon organized the first Girl Scout Troop in the Pawleys Island area and later was again a Girl Scout Leader.
She earned a private Pilot's License in 1948 and a scuba diving certificate in 1980. Mrs. Harmon was a member of the Coastal Carolina gem and Lapidary Club of Myrtle Beach and the Southeast Federation of Mineralogical Societies, Inc. She and her husband owned a Rock and Gem Shop in Conway and obtained many of the stones on field trips. Mrs. Harmon taught Faceting and also cut stones for local jewelers.
Mrs. Harmon was a member of the International Good Sam's Club for RV's and of the local chapter in Myrtle Beach, she was a member of the International Society of the Descendents of Charlemagne and of the Colonial Dames XVII and also the DAR. She and her late husband traveled extensively from coast to coast in the US and in parts of Canada.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Mrs. Harmon is predeceased by: a son, John S. Knowles; and a sister, Alice Ward Short
Surviving are: a daughter, Mary Alice Brennan (Jim)of Summerville; a stepdaughter, Barbara Knowles, of Markhan, TX,; and two grandchildren, John Milton Anderson (Michelle) of Lexington and Wendy Marie Anderson McDaniel (Josh) of Hemingway; great-grandchildren, Jewelle Elizabeth McDaniel and Katelyn McDaniel both of Hemingway, step-grandchildren, Ron Anderson of San Francisco, CA; Karl Anderson (Dawn) of New York, and Nancy Brennan of Greensville, and; step-great-granddaughter, Magorie Leird of Clemson
Memorial Services will be two o'clock Saturday, December 19, 2020, in All Saints Cemetery, Pawleys Island.
