Georgetown, SC
Matthew Wilson "Bill" Clary, 75, passed away Saturday, June 25th, 2016 at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He was born and raised in Greenville, SC and was the oldest of the three children of Matthew Wilson Clary and Dorothy Lawson Clary.
Bill graduated from the University of South Carolina and was a member of the 1964 ACC Champion USC golf team. He was a lifelong Gamecocks fan. After college, he went to work with Winn-Dixie and spent his entire career there. He held several positions with Winn-Dixie, most notably Store Manager, District Manager and Regional Manager. In 1998, Bill retired from Winn-Dixie. Shortly after, he and his wife, Peggy, moved to DeBordieu Colony in Georgetown, SC. They lived for a few years in a condo while they were building their dream house on the 13th tee of the DeBordieu golf course. When Bill retired, he did it right. He considered DeBordieu to be heaven on earth. He was able to do everything he loved and almost never left his little piece of heaven. He was an avid fisherman, golfer, shrimper, gardener and hunter, and he was very good at all of them. He best loved sharing the fruits of his efforts with friends and family. From the outpouring of support we have seen, we know he was loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents.
Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Peggy Ellis Clary; son Matthew Wilson Clary III and wife Annette Hudson Clary; daughter Deborah Clary Taylor and husband Brian John Taylor; four grandchildren Ellis Katherine Clary (20), Brandon Hudson Clary (17), Clary Margaret Taylor (12) and Robert Grant Taylor (10); and two sisters Lenora Clary McCall and Carol Clary Self.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 28th at 2:00 pm at Georgetown Presbyterian Church, and will be conducted by Pastor Steve Wilkins, with a reception immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the music ministry of Georgetown Presbyterian Church.
