Alpharetta, Ga.: Mrs. Mabelle "Monk Berry, 91, of A1pharetta, Georgia and Pawley's Island, South Carolina died April 26, 2006. Monk is survived by her son, Bo, and by her grandchildren, Suzanne, Alex, Morgan, J.D., and Ken. Her husband, Jeff, and sons, Ken and Dargan, preceded her in death. Monk was born in Darlington, South Carolina in 1914. She attended Converse College. Monk was a trailblazer who scandalized her college by cutting her hair short, wore pants before anyone else, and was an avid sportswoman. Monk and Jeff enjoyed hunting and fishing. She was a crack shot as proven by her moose and bear hunting trophies and a cover story about her in Field and Stream magazine. Monk and Jeff retired to Pawley's Island, South Carolina in 1976 where she was known as a friend to anyone needing a friend. Monk was a member of Pawley's Island Community Church. Funeral services for Monk Berry will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday April 29, 2006 at Pawley's Island Community Church Chapel, 10304 Ocean Highway, Pawley's Island, South Carolina 29585. Interment will be at All Saints Church Cemetery, Pawley's Island. The family will receive visitors at Mayer Funeral Home, 222 St. James Street, Georgetown, SC 29440 on Friday April 28, 2006 from 3:00 pm-6:00 pm.
