Georgetown:
Melvin Graves Haimes, 90, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at his residence.
Mr. Haimes was born in Greenville, Miss. on June 30, 1915, a son of the late Glemmie Morrison Haimes and Essye Graves Haimes. He grew up in Greenville and graduated from high school there. Mr. Haimes worked with the Works Project Administration for a time and later served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He was employed by International Paper Co. in Georgetown before and after serving in the military. Mr. Haimes also worked at a paper mill in Savannah, Tenn. and Smurfit-Stone Paper Mill in Florence. After his retirement in 1977, he returned to Georgetown to live. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and outdoorsman. Mr. Haimes was a member of All Saints Church at Pawleys Island and the widower of Luba Lemish Haimes.
Surviving are: a son, Glemmie Haimes of Lexington; a daughter, Stephanie Whipper of Opopka, Fla.; and a sister, Evelyn Hortlein of Gulf Shores, Ala.
Memorial services will be eleven o'clock Thursday morning, June 8, 2006, at Old All Saints Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Timothy D. Surratt.
