Obituary

McClellanville: Mertice Gaskins Cumbee, 86, wife of Jack Cumbee passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at Roper Hospital in Charleston. Mrs. Cumbee was born in Berkeley County on November 19, 1935, a daughter of the late Mack Theodore Gaskins and Janie Lee Brinson Gaskins. She grew up in McClellanville and attended McClellanville High School. Mrs. Cumbee was a faithful member for many years at Wren's Chapel United Methodist Church. She served on the administrative board of the church. She and Jack were responsible for the care and planning of the cemetery. Mrs. Cumbee was employed by the US Postal Service for over twenty-three years until retirement. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed every minute, also her flowers were her passion. In addition to her husband of McClellanville, Mrs. Cumbee is survived by: a daughter, Sharon C. Fudge of Bamberg, a sister, Bernice "Bunny" Cumbee , a brother, Thomas J. Gaskins both of North Charleston; and her only grandson, Jeremy Randall Fudge (Katherine) of N. Augusta. The family suggests memorials to: St Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 263 Danny Thomas Pl., Memphis, TN 38105 Burial will be private. A memorial service will be held after the first of the year.
