Obituary

Georgetown: Milicent "Bebe" Cooper Gurney, 91, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 10, 2005, at her residence. Mrs. Gurney was born in Hartsville on August 10, 1913, a daughter of the late Samuel Hanna Cooper and Ida Elizabeth Waldron Cooper. She grew up in Georgetown and was a graduate and cheer leader at Winyah High School and attended business school. As a young woman, Mrs. Gurney worked in the Georgetown Co. Court House for a time as a secretary. She also worked as an executive secretary for Emerson Radio in N. Y. City and was a Sunday school pianist. All through high school and beyond, Mrs. Gurney played the piano in various orchestras for the listening and dancing pleasure of hosts of listeners. Mrs. Gurney lived in Franklin Square, N. Y. for a number of years prior to returning to Georgetown. She was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church and was active in the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Gurney was vice-president of the Susanna Wesley Church School Class and on the archive committee of the church. Mrs. Gurney was predeceased by: her husband, Joseph John Gurney, USAF, Ret.; and a grandson, Michael J. Cooper. Surviving are: two sons, James Cooper and his wife Ruth of Newark, Del. and Stephen Gurney of New York City; a daughter, Sara Gurney of Lyons, N. Y.; a daughter-in-law, Joan M. Cooper of Marmora, N. J.; twin sister, Mildred C. Higgins of Georgetown; sister, Dotsy C. Walker of Chicago, Ill.; three grandchildren, Barbara Briney and her husband Norman and Laura Strube, all of Oceanview, N. J., and Linda Melini and her husband Michael of Woodbine, N. J.; seven great-grandchildren, Corrie Blackwelder and her husband Garrett, Paul J. Briney, Brenda Briney, Kayce Briney, Amanda Strube, Jenny Strube, and Joseph Melini.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be eleven o'clock Thursday morning, July 14, 2005, at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Laurie McAlpine.
