Obituary for William Eric Chidley

William Eric Chidley, 83, beloved husband of Emma Hall Chidley (née Gorman Hall), died on Saturday, Oct. 7, at home, peacefully and surrounded by his family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Eric was born on Jan. 19, 1934 in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada, the son of Stewart and Olive Chidley, and younger brother of Raymond (deceased). Growing up in the nearby town of Little Britain, Eric developed the loves of family, of hard work and of sport (especially hockey and baseball, at which he excelled) that endured throughout his life. A graduate of the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto (now Ryerson University), and married to his first wife, Sheila (née Goard) in 1958, Eric’s first career was chicken farming, but within short order he would dedicate his talents to a more urban pursuit – in the budding industry of advertising.
Beginning in the late 1950s and over much of the next three decades, Eric worked in Toronto as an account executive for such advertising agencies as Ogilvy & Mather, McKann Erickson and DDB Needham. In 1970, his career took him and his family (which now included two sons, Paul and Joey) to Houston, Texas, where he was instrumental not just in managing the Shell Oil account for his agency, but also in founding the MHHA minor hockey league, which helped popularize the northern sport there.
In the late 1980s, Eric, now divorced, met the love of his later life, Emma Gorman Hall, of Pawleys Island, and soon decided to spend the rest of his days with her. They were married on Oct. 28, 1989, at the Belin United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet. Eric became a permanent resident of Pawleys Island.
Throughout his career, Eric loved to talk politics, advertising and sports, especially about his beloved Toronto Blue Jays, Maple Leafs and, later, the USC football and women’s basketball squads. Whether around the front table of Barberians, in the stands watching the Jays, or at dinner with his family, Eric liked nothing so much as trying to “solve the world’s problems” (as he often put it) through discussion and debate. Though not always successful in that effort, his keen intellect, his passion, and his independence of thought and spirit always came shining through, and those traits endured throughout his life, including during a long struggle with cancer. In his later years especially, he was comforted by his love of family, as well as a deepening faith in God.
Eric is survived by Emma; son Paul and his wife, Liz, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; son Joey, of Toronto; stepdaughter Leigh Ellis and her husband, Matt, of Pawleys Island; granddaughters Laura and Olivia; grandsons Andrew and Samuel; and step-grandchildren Madeline and Seth
